Our featured poem for the month of November is Placeholder by Laila S.

Placeholder

I am a placeholder in your life
one among your endless stream
of pretty girls
who all resemble me
but must possess
something different
I can see it in your eyes
as you count down the seconds
until you can politely take me home
It’s not that you don’t love me
you do, but it’s a distant love
and not your best
~
I see you look at every
beautiful belle that passes
and wonder if she is better
than me
Could she be kinder?
more adventurous?
Would she do that thing
that you love in bed
that I begrudgingly do
when I feel I owe you
for your kindness?
~
If all I can be is the marker
in between true chapters
of your life
I will play that role as best I can
and when the time comes
to turn the page
I will bow out gracefully
